In January, 2009, s’Cool Food led a team of representatives from Carpinteria, Goleta and Santa Barbara School Districts on a tour of Tom Shepherd’s organic farm in Carpinteria. The purpose of the site-visit was to expose Food Service Directors and other School Administrators to a farm in their community that has the potential to provide fresh, healthy and locally grown produce. Visitors were greeted by Tom Shepherd, one of the area’s premier organic farmers, who discussed his growing practices, crop selection and desire to work with local schools. Participants toured his fields, saw freshly picked and cleaned produce, and even picked fresh strawberries.
Currently, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria Unifed School Districts are purchasing some produce from Tom Shepherd Farms.
